Understanding SSH Keys

SSH, which stands for Secure Shell, is a cryptographic network protocol used for operating network services securely over an unsecured network. SSH keys are a pair of cryptographic keys that can be used to authenticate a user to a remote server. There are two types of SSH keys: public keys and private keys.

Generating an SSH Key Pair on macOS

1. Open Terminal on your macOS device.
2. Use the command ssh-keygen -t rsa -b 4096 -C "your_email@example.com" to generate a new SSH key pair.
3. You will be prompted to enter a file in which to save the key. Press Enter to save the key in the default location.
4. Next, you will be prompted to enter a passphrase to secure your private key. It is recommended to use a strong passphrase for added security.
5. Once the SSH key pair is generated, you will see a message indicating the key fingerprint and location where the keys are saved.

Adding the SSH Key to the SSH Agent

1. Start the SSH agent by running the command eval "$(ssh-agent -s)".
2. Add your SSH private key to the SSH agent using the command ssh-add ~/.ssh/id_rsa.
3. You will be prompted to enter the passphrase you created earlier for the private key.

Copying the Public Key to the Remote Server

1. Use the command ssh-copy-id username@remote_host to copy your public key to the remote server. Replace username with your username on the remote server and remote_host with the IP address or domain name of the server.
2. You will be prompted to enter your password on the remote server to complete the process.

Testing the SSH Key Pair

1. Use the command ssh username@remote_host to connect to the remote server. You should be able to log in without entering a password.
2. If you encounter any issues, double-check the permissions of the ~/.ssh directory and the files within it on both your local machine and the remote server.
